Recently there have been posters around Berridale concerning a missing cat called Lionell. Lionell has been greatly loved and his human companion has been up at all hours of the night and day calling and looking for him. Yesterday she was told Lionell had been trapped by a man in a nearby street and drowned in a garbage bin filled with water. A man living on Robertson Street in Berridale. When that man was asked about it, at his workplace in Berridale, he made it very clear he would kill cats whether he knew they were domesticated or not. He has claimed a cat kill by his dog a few months back. In the conversation about Lionell he made it clear his dog may have killed other cats (stated that his dog would kill cats and he would just get rid of the body without needing to tell anyone).
Thing is since I have been in this area I have heard of a number of cruelties done to cats and there have been a number of cats missing. Lionell lived in an area of Berridale where many cats have gone missing. There seems to be a code in the community - you can tell of the deed but make sure never to do anything about it, never to have a community dialogue about it, just keep it between yourself and maybe one other. That code has probably been much to do with the amount of suicides in our area. The shhhhh say nothing, dont rock the boat, dont stick out, dont express, and try not to care too much.
We need dialogue. Heres the thing, the guy who happily kills cats whether beloved companions of humans or feral says he does it because some cat has apparently killed his daughters birds (there are heaps of people with birds outside in cages and they also have cats - how does a cat get into the bird cage?). If he understood the effect of cruelty he would know he is doing a greater cruelty to his own daughter than a cat did to his bird (if that happened as he seems to tell a number of non truths). To bring up a child to heartlessness is one of the greatest cruelties of all.
I have had a number of cats and lived in the bush where the cats didnt go after birds. They didnt because they were well fed and in their early years a made a quiet but stern NO, when they went near birds. There are always solutions without violence or cruelty. With the advent of youtube we are seeing heaps of videos with birds and cats getting along, lions and deer getting along, wolves and man getting along - there is so much that is amazing out there and people need to know about that.
Here is a place to speak on this. Here is a place to express and perhaps find others with the same concerns. Please speak out now.

If you haven't already, why has this not been reported to the authorities for investigation? Recently there have been posters around Berridale concerning a missing cat called Lionell. There is alread a report in on a cat being caged and taken to the river (photographed), and the case on Lionell will be added to that this morning. It was only found out yesterday evening. There have been a number of missing cats in this area of Berridale and the RSPCA inspector has been informed of this. More information was to go to the inspector before she started talking to the people involved.

This forum was created mainly so people could discuss community matters which are often thrown to the closet of taboo. Why taboo? Why not discuss essential issues concerning ethics and compassion. Doesnt such discussion pave the way to positive and kind solutions from which the whole community can benefit?
Country communities are perhaps different to city communities in their taboo subjects. So many people I have spoken with in my work as a counsellor, remember most significantly a time in their youth when their father took the old dog out and shot it. Many were asked to be there for that in order to "grow up". I have counselled people (and dont worry here I am not refering to people in our region you might know) who in their depression (or in their partners depression) killed their horses, dogs, cats and were about to shoot themselves when another event stopped them. Dont you all feel that if you grow up being told the "real" world is where you have to throw away your love and compassion, at the darkest times you will throw away other lives as well as your own? I think animal cruelty in the country is a huge issue and does indeed involve our social well being as well as the happiness of generations to come. There are solutions without just drowning something or shooting something, and people need to know that.
I am speaking here as a forum member and not as the administrator. I must refer to the greatest of wisdoms when I am trying to find answers to the social pain of cruel acts. The ancient knowledge was that what we do to another we do to ourselves. If you drown a cat to protect the caged birds you have given to your child, you drown your child in the immersion of cruelty. The cycle continues, though some with great compassion step out of it. If you teach your children that some creatures are bad while others good, you set a seed in their heart that they may only be above or below another but never sacred for their own sake. Indeed the issue of killing cats is as vital as the issue of social happiness - if you understand that what you do, you do to all and you do to yourself.

Just as a follow up. Since posting that a person had claimed to have killed the missing cat Lionell, there have been a number of harrasment issues for Lionell's human companion. The person who is said to have bragged he killed him (and we are all hoping that in fact this is not what has happened to Lionell, that he is living it up somewhere happily) would seem to have been tearing down Lionels posters and throwing them in the yard of Lionells human campanion, "J".
This has added further distress to "J" given that she had been up looking for him most hours of every night since he went missing. Putting up posters was to seek the communities help and it is a normal action when cat goes missing. Indeed the thing to do is go looking, call out, put up posters and speak and ask people to check sheds, under houses, or any place a cat could be the trapped.
The great and added saddness is now another cat from that household has gone missing. This is a household where the cats are greatly loved and brought in every night. One night Lionell didnt come home, and another, Ginger cat didnt come home. "J" dealt with having someone throw Lionell's poster in her yardwhile that very same day Ginger went missing. In her distress "j" put the posters up again and they were all taken down. She then put up Lionell and Gingers posters in a few places. These were taken down openly by Bobbie, a person who works with K. We can say his name as he has also told the police he has done this. Bobbie was carrying a knife when he came into "J"s yard. While this is now part of a police report so the rest cannot be said here, just to say "J" is clearly feeling fear, harrasment and intimidation. Having done nothing, having not even known K or Bobbie before all this happened she is now fearful each time she goes out looking for Ginger. She is not able to tell people about Ginger as the posters keep being taken down.
What happenes in the town? Well there are cat lovers who care and some have had to keep their cats in during the hot summers because this type of stuff is happening in Berridale. The intimidators seem to win. DO you think they should win? Do you think there should be silence?
