It has been reported in other posts that cats have been trapped in rabbit traps in Berridale. These traps are illegal due to their cruelty. It is not only rabbits that get caught in such traps, and clearly no animal should go through such suffering. The RSPCA gets a number of reports of animals caught in the steel jaws of a rabbit trap.
Recently someone who had lived in this area put a notice in the Berridale Buy Sell and Swap as well as the Jindabyne Noticeboard, ( www.facebook.com/groups/302156863884/permalink/10153833162413885/?comment_id=10153836955428885¬if_t=group_comment_reply ), to say that they had rabbit traps for ten dollars each. A person in Berridale and people in Jindabyne showed interest in buying these illegal traps. In the Jindabyne discussion some spoke of using the traps especially for cats and others on using the traps as they liked the damage they did to the rabbits. If you know of a person buying and using steel jawed rabbit traps please report this to the RSPCA. Also, as the selling of such traps except to a verified collector is illegal, you can also report this to the police.
The reason the traps are illegal is that they cause horrific injuries and pain to the trapped animal. Even if you are in a small town and dont like to draw attention, please do what is good and right above what seems easiest. Thing is in the long run unless animal cruelty is stopped it will effect you in some tragic way (as suffering effects all). A lot of times people who might use such traps have been brought up to believe its OK, that it is necessary. Such people may be afraid of questioning the morality behind thier actions and need to hear from others that it is not OK. or necessary to set such traps - they need to hear this from others in order to even begin to think about it. Such people may not be able to see other options and may have long ago forgone their compassion in this matter. Help them allow their natural compassion again, please.
