Sadly the NSW government has decided to wipe out some 90 percent of brumbies (wild horses) in the Kosciuszko National park. Apparently "scientists" have found that brumbies damage sensitive waterways and natural habitat – quite amazingly they single out brumbies as the culprit to be dealt with, rather than the damming of rivers, cattle farming, geoengineering for the ski industry and a host of other human and devastating “projects” .
The culling of brumbies is not a new matter nor is it the first time such action has been taken. To me culling is always a tragic and unethical response at any time, but it continues to amaze me that "scientists" support the human devastation of our earth then advise that the resultant imbalance be solved through further practices of genocide and mass killing. In terms of physical solutions it has never helped to cull a species - nature constantly works to heal imbalance and culling only puts the effort to balance in further disarray.
Certainly at this time in history with the rapid extinction of so many species due to human destruction, culling 90 percent of brumbies would seem to exemplify and confirm human insanity wouldn’t it? How is it anyone accepts that the answer to environmental destruction is to create more destruction? The environmental destruction has clearly been created by humans and the solution should be to change how we do things shouldn’t it?
Here in the Snowy Mountains there are very clear and unquestionable events have lead to environmental destruction and desolation of the ecosystem, these include -
1. The building of the Snowy Hydro Scheme (the damming of our rivers, drowning of towns and bushland)
2. The general clearing of the land for farming and then farming with animals that are not well suited to the natural environment (such as cattle) who damage the soil
3. The development of towns and major road systems
4. The introduction of various new species to the area (including horses, rabbits, foxes, cattle and sheep) and the intentional killing of various native fauna and flora to “turn” the ancient Australian environment into a more European landscape
5. The clearing and engineering of mountain slopes for the ski industry
6. The acknowledged geoengineering (particularly cloud seeding and snow making) in the environment for the ski industry. There is also the unacknowledged geoengineering in this area which quite possibly is the reason for whole forests of dead trees throughout the area (the “dieback”).
Surely the answer to environmental problems is not to cull yet another species en- masse but to learn again the way to live in nature. We are not separate to nature, indeed we cannot exist without nature. Now is the time to support all life, humans have no time left to continue with the insane logic that destroying the “other” saves the self. Human practices of culling have actually lead us to the brink of our own extinction.
The answer is clearly to begin respecting all life, to treat our environment with reverence. OK so now we have horses, rabbits, foxes, cattle, grasses and fruits that weren’t in the ecosystem 220 years ago. So the answer is to work harmoniously with nature as it rebalances. Nature can rebalance quite well if allowed to do so. It is time to once again recognise the innate validity and implicit importance of all species, all life, all that is. We really cant exist without the existence of all other life . Bit by bit destructive mono farming practices need to be exchanged for life embracing practices (perhaps permaculture and organic farming). Bit by bit the way of infrastructure needs to change so we don’t ravage and pollute the environment. Rather than clearing the land, let things grow – nature will find a way. Rather than spraying everything with poison, let nature return us to well being in its way. Rather than polluting the earth recognise that our physical and spiritual vitality depends on harmonious coexistence of all beings.
It is little wonder that our authorities have a concept of culling en-masse when they have been brought up in a western world where most are taught from early childhood that nature is our enemy and we must devise as many unnatural ways possible to overcome it. Western world teaching has been to somehow engender the perspective that humans are something outside of nature and somehow more important than all else in creation. With that the western thinker destroys as if it is a right of passage, and fails to see or feel the misery they load onto another and visit upon their world.
What we do to another we do to ourselves, this is the ancient teaching and it is truth. When you cull masses of horses you are ripping out the heart of your being, tearing at the beauteous spirit, born of love, which gives your heart reason to beat at all. Our war with nature is a war on ourselves. The western world has been making this inner declaration of destruction for a couple of thousand years, refusing then to listen to those who recognise the sacredness of all being. The fear of nature has lead to centuries of massacre, war and the perpetuation of a most cruel, arrogant ignorance.
Just sitting back and allowing a cull of 90 percent of brumbies is as much to do the deed yourself. Let’s address the imbalance we have created in a compassionate way and work with nature in creating a new balance AND please, let us not allow this cull to take place. By Jen Stone (Nabu)
